Facebook Page Setup

Overview

Facebook is currently the largest social networking site with over 900 million users and is intended to connect friends, family and business associates. Facebook is a great place to start building your social media strategy because many of your constituents are already using it.

For more information on creating a social media strategy, see the Being Social article in the Resources section of this site.

Creating a Facebook Page

  1. Go to https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php and sign in with your Facebook account.
  2. Select the "Company, Organization or Institution" box.
  3. Choose an appropriate category from the drop menu.
  4. Enter the name of your organization in the "Company Name" field.
  5. Select the "I agree to Facebook Pages Terms" checkbox and press the "Get Started" button.

Setting Up Your Facebook Page

Once your page has been created, you can customize it with your organization's logo, add a description, link back to your site and promote your page through Facebook ads.

Profile Picture

We recommend uploading your organization's logo for the page Profile Picture because it reinforces your brand and makes your page more immediately recognizable to people who are already familiar with you.

About

We recommend using the same search description you wrote for your site's home page in the description text box. (You did write a great search engine description for your site, right?) Don't forget to enter your web site address to direct people back to your site for more information.

Enable Ads

You can pay to advertise your organization on Facebook by enabling ads. We don't have a recommendation for or against enabling ads at this time.

Like Your Page and Invite Your Friends

Once your page has been setup, you'll have the opportunity to "Like" it, invite your friends and post messages on your new page wall.
